Description:
One of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. was expanding their research campus in the Midwest by adding a 90,000 sq. ft lab animal research facility on the site. During the master planning phases, it was determined that underground truck docks, which would be required to service the facility, represented an exorbitant cost and put the project at financial risk due to a fixed budget.
Solution:
An engineering study indicated that the two adjacent facilities had existing dock capacity to handle the projected volume for the new research lab. An onsite study of current operations, coupled with a detailed material handling analysis for the new facility, allowed for the development of five different scenarios to address operational issues in both current and future state conditions. Master planning and design for the new facility was then modified to accommodate material flow between three buildings on the campus to eliminate the need for the additional truck docks.
Savings or Revenue Opportunity:
$4.0 million savings in design and construction costs.
Project Duration:
Six Weeks
