Description:
A hospital in Southeastern Michigan was experiencing nurse staffing issues in their emergency department due to a shortage of qualified personnel available in the local job market. This circumstance created problems with patient flow and high utilization levels for physicians and nurses working in the department.
Solution:
An engineering study indicated that a large percentage of time expended by the the nursing staff was non-value added work, such as making and moving beds, handling paperwork, etc,. The proposed solution was to create a second job classification for technicians and take a process driven approach to reducing non-value added work for the staff, by either eliminating or shifting certain tasks to the technicians.
Savings or Revenue Opportunity:
$125,000.00 annual savings in nursing hours.
Project Duration:
Ten Weeks
