Description:
A 325 bed regional hospital in the Midwest was experiencing approximately 3.7 hours per day of Status C closures in their emergency medicine department due to patient volume and throughput issues.
Solution:
An engineering study revealed that the emergency department became both resource and facility constrained by mid-morning every day, and as patient volumes increased, a bottleneck would occur by late afternoon. The proposed solution was to shift daily start times for physician and nursing staff to level workloads throughout the day, and add physician hours at key periods during the week. Also, additional beds were proposed for urgent care patients to reduce overall bed utilization within the department.
Savings or Revenue Opportunity:
$1.2 million revenue increase for the emergency medicine department
$6.5 million additional revenue increase in hospital admissions
Project Duration:
Twelve Weeks
